When I Found You by Catherine Ryan Hyde

I am not a cryer, but this book nearly brought me to tears. I’m almost sure I received this ebook for free from BookBub (if you don’t get their emails you should). I didn’t expect much from it but the summary intrigued me.

The first thing I need to say about this novel, it’s a breath of fresh air. To be honest I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a story with a plot line like this one. Sure there’s been abandoned baby stories and blah blah blah. This novel takes a spin from being a seemingly tragic heartwarming story to something entirely different.

Without spoiling the novel for you, a man find an abandoned baby in the woods whilst hunting. The man feels a connection with the child but the baby is returned to its biological family.

Now reading the paragraph summary above you’d think the story would turn into something similar to “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” with a few differences here and there. Right? Wrong.

Now I can’t explain too much about why this book is so good without completely ruining it. All I can say is that the boy grows up and the bond the rescuer and him share is touching and fascinating. It is not the mushy story I expected but I loved it even more for that reason!

8/10 from me, I’m only docking 2 points because this genre of novel isn’t my favorite.

Stay tuned for more book reviews!

And always read until the Bookends! 😉
